Productivity Impacts on Coffee Push Prices Up

The expectation is that the beans will be of good size for better yield in conversion

The abundant rainfall over the past two months has significantly improved the conditions and vitality of coffee plantations. However, factors such as the biennial nature of the crop and possible previous climate impacts indicate that the 2025 harvest is expected to be lower than that of 2024, which could put upward pressure on prices.

The first estimate of this year points to a total production of 51.8 million bags of processed coffee, representing a 4.4% reduction compared to the previous harvest, according to the National Supply Company (Conab).

The expectation is that the beans will be of good size for better yield in conversion, which refers to the number of cherries needed to produce a bag of coffee. The moisture content of the coffee bean is a determining factor for the quality and efficiency of this conversion. Therefore, harvesting should be carried out at the ideal maturation point to ensure well-sized beans and minimize losses.

Moreover, moisture content directly influences the drying and storage processes, preventing issues such as unwanted fermentation and fungal development, explains Roney Smolareck, an agronomist at Loc Solution, a company specializing in renting and selling Motomco grain moisture meters.

“Conversion yield improves when the beans are larger and more uniform. This means fewer cherries are needed to reach the final bag weight, optimizing production and reducing waste,” he states.

Fernanda Rodrigues da Silva, Customer Relationship Manager at Loc Solution, highlights the importance of knowing the grain’s moisture level to prevent product devaluation in the market. “The Motomco Connect is a perfect device for field measurements. The measurement process is fully automatic, providing precise results in less than 8 seconds,” she says.

Through the Connect App, the moisture meter can wirelessly communicate with mobile devices via Bluetooth technology, displaying measurement results on the app’s screen.
