With record 2024/25 harvest projections, the company intensifies the updating of grain moisture measuring equipment.
The first projections from the National Supply Company (Conab) for the 2024/2025 grain harvest estimate 322.47 million tons, an 8.3% increase compared to the previous season. If confirmed, this will be the largest harvest ever recorded by Conab, underscoring Brazil’s strategic role in global grain production. In this scenario, preparing the production chain becomes essential to ensure efficiency, safety, and reliability in the grain trading process.
In response to this growing demand, Loc Solution, the primary owner of the Motomco brand of grain moisture meters, has intensified its efforts to update equipment. Over the past month, the company has carried out improvements to various devices used in the Metrology Laboratories of the State Agency of Metrology of Mato Grosso do Sul, the Superintendency of the National Institute of Metrology and Quality of Goiás, and the Institute of Metrology and Quality of Minas Gerais.
“These updates aim to reinforce the accuracy and reliability of grain moisture data, a critical factor for ensuring transparency in commercial transactions within the agricultural sector,” says Roney Smolareck, agricultural engineer at Loc Solution.
Luiz Marcelo Scalioni, Director of the Institute of Metrology and Quality of Minas Gerais, emphasizes that maintaining moisture meters is a critical step in ensuring that equipment meets the standards required by metrological legislation. “Regular maintenance of the equipment is essential to ensure that the meters operate within the maximum permissible errors, providing greater measurement accuracy,” explains Scalioni.
Luciana Boni Cogo, Technical Director of the State Agency of Metrology of Mato Grosso do Sul, adds that the precision of updated moisture meters prevents distortions in results and potential losses for producers and buyers. “Regular maintenance contributes to a transparent buying and selling operation, ensuring the equipment meets the parameters stipulated by the standards. An error of just 1% in measurements could cause significant losses in large-scale transactions,” says Luciana.
For Bruno Gregório Menita, researcher and technologist in Metrology and Quality at the Goiás Superintendency of INMETRO, updating moisture curves in instruments is essential. He highlights that the precision of measurements ensures the compliance of equipment with INMETRO legislation. “The main benefits are the reliability of results, which directly impact commercial transactions, as well as the compliance of the instrument with legislation, avoiding rejections in metrological verifications or inspections by regulatory agencies,” explains Menita.
The equipment updates include replacing devices with more recent models, installing new components, and updating software.
Ensuring compliance with Portaria No. 47, from February 2022, is a central point of the process. Grain moisture measurement must be accurate because this variable directly affects product quality during harvesting, transportation, and storage. Controlling moisture not only ensures proper storage but also influences grain value. “Knowing the moisture content facilitates the transfer, trading, and pricing process,” explains Roney Smolareck, adding that Motomco’s moisture meters are designed to serve a wide range of crops, including soybeans, corn, wheat, and beans.
