Countdown to the End of the Sanitary Void: MT Prepares for September 6, While MS Waits Until the 15th

Like other states, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul have adjusted their phytosanitary break for the next 2024/25 crop season

The changes in the soybean sanitary void calendar this year require extra attention from farmers, especially in states like Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso, where the dates have been adjusted. This phytosanitary measure is crucial for the prevention of pests and diseases in soybean crops, such as Asian rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi), one of the most severe threats to the crop.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, the sanitary void began on June 15 and will run until September 15. In Mato Grosso, the date was moved up, starting on June 8 and ending on September 6, unlike previous years when it began in the second half of June. During this minimum 90-day period, farmers are not allowed to plant or maintain living soybean plants at any development stage in the designated areas.

The Agricultural Defense Institute of the State of Mato Grosso (Indea) will conduct inspections on properties to ensure compliance with the sanitary void. Last year, during the enforcement of the phytosanitary measure, 5,864 inspections were carried out, resulting in 67 infraction notices.

According to agronomist Roney Smolareck of Loc Solution, complying with the sanitary void is just as important as choosing quality seeds for planting. Seed quality is a key factor for a good harvest, as it minimizes the risk of contamination and ensures the genetic integrity of the plants. “Seed moisture content is a determining factor for successful planting and the subsequent development of the plant. Keeping the moisture content between 12% and 13% not only promotes uniform and vigorous germination but also reduces the risk of mechanical damage that can compromise grain integrity,” emphasizes the agronomist. Additionally, the origin of the cultivation fields should be verified to ensure that proper agricultural practices were followed.

For the upcoming harvest, Smolareck mentions that projections are excellent, considering the production of 147.38 million tons of soybeans harvested in 2023/24. The international agricultural commodities market is forecasting a large global supply of soybeans in 2024/25, with estimates of a consistent increase in Brazilian exports by 10%. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) projects a 10.5% increase in soybean production in Brazil, which would bring production to 169 million tons.
